The New Gym Owner's Guide — What to do in the one month before you open

You have one month before your gym opens.

Equipment is coming in. Walls are painted. You are almost ready.

Most new gym owners at this stage are just waiting. Finishing small things. Fixing last minute stuff. Waiting for the big day.

That is the biggest mistake you can make.

The one month before you open is actually the most powerful marketing time you will ever have. Because you have something no other gym in your area has right now.

You have the excitement of something new.

People love new things. A new gym opening in their area is interesting. It is something to talk about. Something to be part of.

Use that excitement. Start before you open. Because the gyms that win are the ones that had 50 members waiting before the door ever opened.

Here is exactly what to do. Step by step.

Step 1 — Pre Sell Memberships Right Now

Do not wait until you open to sell memberships.

Start selling today.

Go outside. Walk into every apartment building near your gym. Every office. Every shop. Talk to people face to face.

Tell them one simple thing.

"A brand new gym is opening near you. The first 100 members get a special price that nobody else will ever get again."

That is your pitch. Simple. Direct. Exciting.

People love being part of something from the beginning. They love getting a deal that others cannot get. Give them that feeling and they will sign up before they have even seen the gym.

What to say when you meet someone:

"Hi. I am opening a new gym just down the road. We open next month. I am offering the first 100 members a founding member rate — the lowest price we will ever offer. After we open this price is gone forever. Would you like to lock it in today?"

Keep it short. Keep it confident. Let the offer do the work.

Step 2 — Build A Waiting List

Not everyone will say yes on the spot. That is fine.

Your second goal is to get their phone number.

Create a waiting list. Tell people they can join the list and get first access when you open. First chance to book. First chance to see the gym. Maybe a free first session just for being on the list.

People who say no to buying today will often say yes to joining a free waiting list. And once they are on your list you can follow up.

How to build the list:

Print simple flyers. Nothing expensive. Black and white is fine. Just put these things on it.

  • Your gym name
  • One line about what makes you different
  • Your WhatsApp number
  • One line saying — "message us to join the waiting list and get a free first session when we open"

Put these flyers everywhere.

Apartment noticeboards. Tea shops. Medical stores. Supermarkets. Bus stops. Anywhere people stand and read things.

When someone messages your WhatsApp:

Reply immediately. Every time. Do not wait hours.

Send them a friendly message. Tell them about the gym. Tell them the opening offer. Ask for their name. Save their number. That person is now on your list.

Your list is gold. Treat it that way.

Step 3 — Create An Offer They Cannot Say No To

Your opening offer needs to be so good that people feel stupid saying no.

Here are some ideas. Pick one or mix them.

Offer 1 — The Founding Member Deal

First 100 members get the lowest price the gym will ever offer. Locked in forever. Price goes up after we open.

This works because it creates urgency and exclusivity at the same time. People do not want to miss the founding member price.

Offer 2 — Pay 3 Get 3 Free

Pay for 3 months now before we open and get 3 months completely free.

This works because you get 6 months of cash upfront before you have even opened. And the member feels like they got an incredible deal.

Offer 3 — Annual With Bonuses

Pay for a full year before we open and get 2 extra months free plus one free PT session every month.

This is your best cash upfront option. If 20 people take this before you open you start day one with serious money in your account.

Offer 4 — Free First Session

Join the waiting list. Get a free first session on opening day. No commitment. Just come and try.

This is the lowest barrier option. Use it to get as many people through the door on day one as possible. Some of them will join after trying.

The key to any offer is this. It must feel like it is only available for a limited time. Once the offer is gone it is gone. Create that feeling and people will act.

Step 4 — Document Everything On Instagram

Start posting today. Even if you have zero followers.

Film the gym being set up. Equipment arriving. Flooring being laid. Walls being painted. Your trainers doing a test workout. The sign going up outside.

Post it every day.

People love watching something being built. It creates excitement. By the time you open you already have people who feel connected to your gym before they have even walked in.

What to post:

Day 1First look at the empty space"Something big is coming to Kakkanad."
Day 3Equipment arriving"The machines have landed."
Day 7Flooring being laid"The floor is ready. Are you?"
Day 10Trainer doing a test workout"Meet the team."
Day 14The sign going up outside"We are almost ready."
Day 25Countdown"5 days to go. Have you secured your founding member rate?"
Day 30Opening day"We are open. Come in."

You do not need fancy editing. Just film it on your phone. Post it. Be consistent.

Step 5 — Visit Every Business Near You

This is the step most gym owners skip because it feels uncomfortable.

Do it anyway.

Walk into every office building near your gym. Ask to speak to the HR manager or office admin. Tell them you are opening a gym nearby and you want to offer their employees a special corporate rate.

What to say:

"Hi. I am opening a gym 5 minutes from here next month. I want to offer your employees a corporate membership rate — something exclusive for your team. Would you be open to sharing the details with them?"

Most HR people will say yes because it is a free benefit they can offer employees without any cost to the company.

Even one office sending you 10 to 15 employees at a slightly discounted rate is real members before day one.

Do not just visit once. Go back. Follow up. Bring a flyer. Be persistent.

Step 6 — Make Opening Day An Event

Opening day is not just the day you start taking members.

It is your biggest marketing opportunity of the entire year.

Make it feel like an event.

Free entry for everyone. A free trial class. Music. Energy. Good vibes. Invite everyone on your waiting list personally. Post about it on Instagram every day the week before.

Get as many people through the door as possible on day one.

Because here is what happens.

Someone comes on opening day. They have a great experience. They go home and tell 3 friends. Those 3 friends come the next week. Word of mouth starts on day one.

The energy of opening day sets the tone for everything that follows. Make it memorable.

The One Thing To Remember

The gyms that struggle after opening are the ones that waited until they opened to start marketing.

The gyms that win are the ones that already had people waiting.

You have one month. That is 30 days of opportunity before you open a single door.

Do not waste a single day of it.

Start today.
